Okayama City is a transportation hub for western Japan. Okayama Station is in the city center and is a great place to start your journey into Okayama Prefecture and beyond, as well as for meeting up, shopping, eating, and drinking. There are several large shopping complexes nearby, including AEON Mall Okayama and BIC Camera Electronic shop, as well as a multitude of great individual shops, restaurants, and boutiques.
Okayama City is best known for the beautiful Korakuen Garden, one of the top three traditional gardens in Japan. The 300-year-old garden has been awarded 3 stars in the Michelin Green Guide Japan. Okayama Castle stands adjacent to Korakuen Garden. Known as “Crow Castle” due to its black exterior, the top level of the castle provides a fantastic view of the city. Visitors can dress up in a kimono and take photos, try their hand at making Bizen pottery, enjoy a fruit and ice cream parfait, and learn about the history of the area via displays.
Korakuen Garden and Okayama Castle are located inside the “Culture Zone”, an area in the central area of the city housing a great number of museums, historical, and cultural attractions. Also located in the “Culture Zone” is the Hayashibara Museum, the Okayama Municipal Orient Museum, the Okayama Prefecture Museum of Art, Tenjin Plaza, Okayama Shrine, Symphony Hall, Lunness Hall, the Yumeji Art Museum, and the Okayama Prefectural History Museum. Okayama City is a contemporary city with both modern and traditional elements. The city boasts wonderful attractions while being surrounded by mountains, hills, rivers, and the Seto Inland Sea in the south.
