Kibitsu Shrine is a Shinto shrine that is central to the history of Okayama as well as to the legend of “Momotaro the Peach Boy”. Although it is a religious facility, Shinto is an all-encompassing religion and the shrine itself is a popular sightseeing destination for local residents and visitors alike.
The shrine and surrounding facilities display some unusual architecture, including the double gabled roof on the main shrine hall, the long covered corridor that links buildings, and the Mystic Hall.
The souvenir shop at the base of the stairs is quite extensive with a large selection of goods related to the legend of Momotaro, including tasty ‘kibi dango’ (millet dumplings). There is also a colorful selection of accessories and knick-knacks to remind you of your trip to Okayama.
The Kibi Cycling Road runs along the shrine; if you enjoy cycling this is a good way to reach this piece of Okayama City’s rich heritage.
